Snakes and Snails

2016. TVAK residency, Ahmedabad, India

I made 'Snakes and Snails' during my art residency in TVAK studios in Ahmedebad, India. I was surprised with India. Everywhere I looked there were ancient stone carvings of women and men, sexually liberated, socially, intellectually and spiritually equal but that was not the reality of the daily life as I saw it. The city was drowning in rubbish and there was no romance around, just emotional transactions between men and women. I used drain pipes to make a snake - staring at the drawing of a woman's body, partly hypnotised and fascinated by it, partly interrogating, almost incriminating it; transfixed and charmed by it but ready to attack.
